What is a digital certificate? Digital Certificates are electronic files that act like a kind of online passport. They are issued by the Trust Center, a certificate authority (CA) of the South African Post Office, which verifies the identity of the certificate's holder. They are tamper-proof and cannot be forged. They use a private/public key technology; each key has a unique encryption code. No two keys are ever identical, which is why a key can be used to identify its owner. What is the purpose of digital certificates? Digital certificates have two functions: How do I obtain a digital certificate? Please contact your key account manager who will assist you in obtaining and installing your digital certificate. What operating system should I be running to be able to install a digital certificate? Windows 98 or higher How long after requesting my digital certificate will I receive it? Your key account manager will issue your digital certificate immediately upon him/her visiting your premises. What are the costs involved in obtaining a digital certificate? All digital certificates are free of charge until 1 April 2006 wherafter the policy will be revised. How long will my digital certificate be valid for? Your digital certificate will be valid for a period of one year (starting at the date of installation). The system will, however, indicate the date and time your digital certificate will expire as well as the number of days you have left on your digital certificate. The digital certificate will be activated every time you sign on to the eBDN system as well as when you click on the non-conformance form link on the website. |
