Payment methods

Payment methods

Your choice of method will depend on the -
  • number of items you usually post;
  • type of letter that you send; and
  • service you wish to use.

Remote meter setting (franking machine)
Franking machines are used to make imprints on envelopes to indicate that the postage has been paid. These machines can print any value, therefore there is no need to keep stamps of various denominations on hand. A return address or logo as well as dates can be printed on envelopes. These dates serve as proof of posting. All franking machines in operation must operate on remote meter setting. This involves a contractual agreement (licensing agreement) with the South African Post Office that allows clients to pay in advance for the postage they intend to use. An up-front discount is offered at every remote meter setting.

Note
  • Under no circumstances may articles bearing franking machine imprints be posted in posting boxes.
  • All Post Office products franked by a franking machine must be franked at the published rates.
  • No direct refunds are allowed for incorrectly franked articles. Incorrectly franked articles must be claimed as spoilt impressions.
