Material specifications: Postcards

Thickness and mass
Postcards -
  • must consist of ordinary cardboard not thicker than 0,295 mm; and
  • may not have a mass of more than 252 g/mē.

If Then
The cardboard is thinner than 0,255 mm Its mass should not be less than 160 g/mē.



Dimensions
The dimensions may not be -
  • less than 90 mm x 140 mm (with a 2 mm tolerance); and
  • more than 105 mm x 148 mm (with a 2 mm tolerance).

The word postcard
The word postcard is not required on private postcards in the domestic service, but must appear on private postcards intended for delivery abroad.


Attachments
It is forbidden to attach samples of merchandise or similar articles to postcards. The following may be attached to postcards on certain conditions:

  • Photographs
  • Stamps of all kinds
  • Address strips to fold back
  • Labels
  • Clippings
  • Must not alter the character of the postcard
  • Must consist of paper or other thin material that adheres completely to the postcard
  • All these articles (except address strips or labels) may only be gummed to the back or the left-hand half of the front of the postcard.
  • The right-hand side of the front of the postcard is exclusively for the address of the recipient and the postage stamps.



  • Conditions for postcards
    • Private picture postcards posted by philatelists and marked maximum card - postage stamps on back may be accepted.
    • Postcards may not be cut, folded or otherwise defaced.
    • Postcards bearing impressions of imitation postage stamps are inadmissible.
    • Postcards may not be tied in any way.
    • Postcards with the address side divided into spaces to receive successive addresses are forbidden.


    If Then
    Any of these conditions are breached The postcard will be treated as nonstandard mail and the next applicable rate will be charged.
