Quality and quantity criteria

Criteria
The quality and quantity criteria for mail posted are important for accurate and timeous processing. These criteria are explained below.


Presentation
Mail must be presented according to the sorting criteria and must be:
  • correctly faced;
  • tied in direct destination bundles, if applicable [Small (DL) maxi - 50 or 100 (unsorted)] [nonstandard - 25, 50 or 100 (unsorted)]; and
  • tied or strapped, for example:
    • - Small (DL) maxi-size envelopes: one elastic band widthways and one lengthways
    • - Medium (B5) and Large (B4): two elastic bands widthways, approximately 100 mm apart

Containers
The letter trays or containers in which the mail is presented must be furnished with labels containing the correct information.Refer to sorting criteria.


Other specifications
Also adhere to the following:
  • Accurate sorting levels and transport specifications (refer to sorting criteria)
  • Post Office specifications as laid down in the South African Post Office Machine and Material Specifications* on Small (DL) maxi standard, optical character reader and all other mail, ie:
    • A return address and correct postcode must appear at the back of the envelope. The top front left-hand corner may also be used for this.
    • The correct postcode is a prerequisite and must appear immediately below the name of the destination post office, not after it.
    • The correct fonts must be used in the address.
    • Addresses must be in block format. They must not contain more than five lines, must be written strictly horizontally and printed clearly on white or light-coloured envelopes.
    • Addresses may not contain any punctuation, et cetera.
