Optical character recognition/letter-sorting machines
The optical character reader is already used extensively in many countries. In keeping with new technology, the South African Post Office uses optical character recognition/letter-sorting machines (optical character readers) for mail processing.
These machines -
  • electronically scan the envelope;
  • locate and interpret the address; and
  • apply a linear bar code to the cover or the envelope for sorting purposes.



Why must mail be OCR readable?
The more mail that is OCR readable, the better the service and greater the benefits we can provide for you, the user of the postal service.Your business will benefit from a more efficient postal service.
