2010 FIFA World Cup South AfricaTM Stamp issue date: 23 November 2007 The South African Post Office joins the rest of the nation on 23 November 2007 when it issues the second philatelic miniature sheet to celebrate the 2010 FIFA World CupTM to be played in South Africa. Students from the Pretoria Open Window Art Academy were requested to design the miniature sheet. They had instructions to ensure that no soccer player be recognised in the artwork; nor could any official team colours and logos be used. Tamarin Skead, a student at the Academy, entered the winning artwork for 2007. Tamarin elegantly designed around the restrictions of the brief. Featuring hands and bouncing soccer balls, her miniature sheet uses the colours of the South African flag with, as background, a soccer pitch. “The hands are made from South African products,” says Tamarin. “Hands are not gender or race specific. They symbolise upliftment, which the 2010 FIFA World CupTM will surely bring to South Africa. They symbolise cheering crowds, excitement and exhilaration - which is what our nation will experience during the World Cup.” Tamarin combined various types of media to create the artwork. She used digital media, acrylic, collage, ink and photography. The miniature sheet and commemorative envelope will be available at all Post Offices from 23 November 2007. |
